Three Boxes and a Cube

Project type

Musical score/sculpture
Role: Composer, Designer, Performer

Date

2004/2007

Three boxes and a cube:
Box 1: The amputee
Box 2: The foetus on the sofa
Box 3: The mirror dwarf
Cube

Each box owes its musical structure to the imitation and transcription of
movement. Each panel contains directions for the production of sound.

Frame notation is used throughout the series including the cube, indicating
cues and windows (via ‘event brackets’) for each performer. Each Box also
contains directions that are open to interpretation.

The internal workings of each Box, its ‘subject’, can be seen to represent its human element, which is primarily pataphysical with a focus on the use of everyday objects (of which the Box series itself is metaphor).

The externalised view is the Box as object, independent of any sound realisation. The Box fulfils the role of an art object, this role is extended when the object is assigned the title (and function) of (a) score; this automatically implies sound, the object then takes on the function of a
musical machine.

The boxes were exhibited as part of a solo exhibition at Centre for Recent Drawing in April 2007.

A performance of the boxes can be heard on the album "The Best of Futility Music" - Volume 1 (2009) released by squib-box: https://squib-box.bandcamp.com/album/the-best-of-futility-music-volume-1
